Golden day for Australia at the Korean Open

Performance Pathways athlete Chelsea Gomez has secured Australia's first Gold medal at the Korean Open in Chuncheon.

The up-and-coming Cadet from Taya Taekwondo in New South Wales took to the mat in the -42kg weight division and fought through to win all three of her fights against Korea.

Coached by Abby Sangalang and identified by Australian Taekwondo Pathway Lead Ali Khalil in mid-2021, Gomez has since been training regularly in the NSW Pathways Program.

Australian Taekwondo's Pathways Program is critical in identifying and developing young talent who seek to progress to the elite ranks.

"The opportunities these events present to developing athletes coming through the Pathways Program are critical in their growth and development", said Pathway Lead, Ali Khalil.

"Seeing one of our Pathway athletes come away with gold is just fantastic."

It's been a golden year for Gomez, who also took home gold earlier this year at the 2021 Australian Taekwondo National Championships in Brisbane after defeating Andrea Ishac (Hall's Taekwondo, VIC) in the 37-41 weight division finals.
