Lewis falls short as Taekwondo kicks off in Paris

8 August 2024

Victorian Bailey Lewis delivered an impressive performance at the Olympic Games, making a remarkable debut in the Taekwondo competition at the Grand Palais in Paris.

Lewis shone in the Round of 16, showcasing his skill and precision by defeating 18-year-old Nouridine Garba Issaka of Niger in a dominant 2-0 victory.

Advancing to the quarter-finals, Lewis faced a formidable opponent in Number 1 seed Mohamed Khalil Jendoubi of Tunisia, who would go on to win the bronze medal. Despite a tough contest, Lewis demonstrated his determination and resilience, fighting fiercely against the top-seeded competitor.

While he didn't advance further, Lewis's Olympic journey has been a testament to his talent and hard work. His efforts on the world stage have set a strong foundation for future competitions.

Australia returns to the mat today in the Women's -57 division, with fellow Victorian Stacey Hymer set to compete at 5:58 pm AEST.

You can follow all the Taekwondo action live on Stan Sport or Channel 9. For information about schedules and results, please visit the Paris Olympic website.
